Early Peoples
The first human beings arrived much later in history. This display depicts a typical Plains Indian encampment.
These nomadic people lived off the animals that roamed the vast, unbroken prairie grassland. There were millions of buffalo, which provided nearly everything the people needed. Deer, antelope and elk also were abundant and were used for food, and their skins, which were tanned and made into clothing and tepee covers. The animal bones were used for utensils and implements for everyday life.
These early Indians had no horses. They used dogs to help move their tepees and supplies when they moved to new grasslands.
